Poem Artist Statement

Natasha Robson

Ever since I came to America I loved dance. Dance is my ultimate passion and I don’t think I could live without it. But the other thing that I can’t live without is PEACE.  I believe that peace Is the thing that can set us apart from everyone and at the same thing bring us all together. I think that there are different ways that you can concur peace and I think that each way is the best way. For a few years now I have been studying peace and different ways to deal with different things that come up in a person’s life. Whether those things involve loss and pain to anger and happiness. To me the basis of all of this is to be in touch with one’s self and believe that no matter what everything happens for a reason and that everything will turn out for the better.  For my poem I chose my inspiration to be about peace. I think that the father of peace is Gandhi. I really respect all that he did to make India a peaceful country and I respect that he tried to make that difference using non-violence. So I decided to not only do a poem about peace but make it an ode to Gandhi.
Gandhi decided to take a stand and try to bring India, who was falling apart at the time under a different countries rule to peace and to freedom. He did suggest that his people attack the people from this other country but he told them to treat them with kindness. He advised his people to not fight them and that if they did their country would continue to fall apart. For this I personally look up to him a lot, since I also believe that peace is the right thing to do and that it should take place of anything violent. My poem talks about how Gandhi takes matter in his own hands and how he brought peace to his broken country and happiness to people who seem to have lost hope.  In my poem I have used metaphors to describe the power that Gandhi had and the strength that helped him on his wonderful journey.  My poem is written in the style of a BOP poem along with an ODE poem. A BOP poem is how the poem is written. The problem is stated in the beginning. And the other parts are about how you can change that problem. In my poem I have used some metaphors like “an opaque maze”, and “blossoming from the heart, from the mind”
For exhibition I plan to show my poem through dance. Dance has always helped me to express my feelings and to tell stories in a way that other people may not be able to.  I am probably going to use a cong that doesn’t have lyrics in it and just record my voice to the song and then make up a dance to it.  Since dance is very important to me along with peace I want to show a nice peace that shows both beauty and the fluidity that life can have when we all come together and just make peace happen. I also want to show the power that Gandhi had through my dance moves.  The type of dancing that I will be doing will be in the style of ballet and contemporary, with a little modern thrown in. Hopefully I can succeed in this project and make it the best that it can possibly be.
